Chapter 13

As Liberty sat, carefully reviewing all the surveillance videos from not only the alley, but also from within the actual restaurant, Campbell and Choi were busy questioning the restaurant workers. That included all the servers as well as the kitchen staff, all of whom the owner had been told to call in.

They’d all come in, some looking rather leery and nervous because the story about the strangling victim discovered behind their restaurant had already hit the news.

Questioning the staff ultimately led nowhere. To a worker, no one had seen anything that appeared to be the least bit suspicious. But then Campbell really hadn’t thought they would have, otherwise someone might have come forward by now.

Still, he thought, there was always that outside chance, so he’d been bound to give it a try.

Finished questioning the last staff member, Campbell and Choi left the owner’s office where they had been conducting the interrogations.

“Let’s hope Arizona was more successful than we were,” Campbell said to his partner.

“Well, I really doubt that there was any way she could have been less successful,” Choi remarked, following Campbell down the hallway.

Knocking on the security room door, Campbell popped his head in. He fully expected to find Liberty frowning and murmuring under her breath—or, depending on her level of frustration, vocally threatening to drop kick one of the monitors.

“Anything?” he asked her, trying not to pin too much hope into his tone.

“Something,” she responded.

That caught Campbell’s attention, as well as surprised him. “You’re kidding. Really?” Campbell came into the room, closely followed by his partner. It was a tight squeeze, but Campbell hardly noticed. He was focused on the monitor Liberty was looking at. “What?” he asked. “What did you find?”

Glancing at Choi to see if his partner saw anything, the latter merely shook his head and shrugged.

Liberty rewound the tape and then cued it to the portion that had caught her attention.

“Does this guy look familiar to you?” she asked, pointing out a dark-haired man walking away from the alley.

Campbell leaned over her, taking a closer look at the monitor. She did her best not to respond to the body heat she felt passing between them, but because of the intimacy her search managed to create, it wasn’t easy.

Due to the camera angle, there was only a partial view of the area. Campbell shook his head. “No, should he?” he asked Liberty.

“I could swear he resembles that guy we saw pulling out of the parking lot in that previous murder you caught.” To jog Campbell’s memory, she said, “You know that clip containing that partial license plate that is currently with Valri,” she told him. “All I know is that it looks like the same guy to me.”

She turned to look at Campbell’s face to see if the detective agreed.

“The blurry guy with no name,” Choi suddenly recalled, making the connection.

Liberty flashed the other detective a smile. “One and the same,” she acknowledged, pleased that Choi had picked up on it as well. “And there’s something else,” she told the two detectives.
